Student Spotlight: My 3-Month Research Journey at Heredity Biosciences

In the ever-evolving world of life sciences, hands-on skills are the true game changers. For me—Nikita Rani, a postgraduate biotechnology student—the difference between theory and application became crystal clear the moment I stepped into the Heredity Biosciences training laboratory in Bhubaneswar.

Over the past 3 months, I didn’t just complete a training—I lived an experience that reshaped my confidence, skills, and career aspirations.


Week 1–2: Foundation & Familiarization

I still remember the first day. Nervous yet excited, I was welcomed by a team of passionate scientists and mentors. Our journey began with an orientation to the lab safety protocols, SOPs, and daily documentation procedures.

We quickly dived into:

  • DNA isolation from plant and bacterial samples
  • Preparation of buffers and media
  • Aseptic techniques and microbiological plating
  • Spectrophotometric readings for nucleic acid quantification

The hands-on practice built our muscle memory. And the mentorship ensured we understood not just the how, but also the why behind every step.


Week 3–6: Molecular Biology in Action

As we progressed, the training turned intense and exciting. I got the opportunity to:

  • Prepare PCR Master Mix and run Polymerase Chain Reactions
  • Visualize DNA on agarose gels
  • Analyze gene expression experiments
  • Understand primer design and result interpretation

Each procedure taught me troubleshooting—what to do when bands are missing, or when a gel smears. That real-time thinking isn’t something books can teach.

Week 7–10: Research Exposure & Project Work

Here’s where things got serious.

Under guidance, I designed and executed a mini-research project:
“Antimicrobial activity of plant extracts against clinical bacterial isolates”

From sample preparation to result analysis, I was involved in every stage. I used disc diffusion methods, spectrophotometry, and basic statistical tools to analyze data.

This project helped me:

  • Improve my scientific writing
  • Learn data interpretation techniques
  • Present my findings with confidence
  • Build a strong profile for future PhD/Industry roles

Week 11–12: Career Mentoring, Documentation & Certification

In the final weeks, Heredity Biosciences provided:

  • Resume building workshops
  • Job interview tips and biotech placement guidance
  • Certificate documentation with detailed modules and experiments completed

We were also introduced to real examples of previous interns now working in labs, enrolled in PhDs, or placed in diagnostics and pharma companies.
