Introduction
Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) is a widely used reagent in laboratories, essential for various applications in chemistry, biology, and other scientific disciplines. Whether youβre preparing buffers, titrating acids, or adjusting pH levels, having a 2M NaOH stock solution on hand is invaluable. This guide will walk you through the steps to prepare a 2M NaOH solution safely and accurately.
Materials Needed
- Sodium hydroxide pellets (NaOH)
- Distilled water
- Analytical balance
- Volumetric flask (1 liter)
- Stirring rod or magnetic stirrer
- Safety gear (gloves, goggles, lab coat)
Step-by-Step Procedure
- Calculate the Amount of NaOH Required:
- To prepare a 2M solution, you need 2 moles of NaOH per liter of solution. The molar mass of NaOH is 40 g/mol.
- Thus, you need 2 moles Γ 40 g/mol = 80 g of NaOH to make 1 liter of 2M NaOH solution.
- Weigh the NaOH:
- Using an analytical balance, carefully weigh out 80 g of NaOH pellets. NaOH is highly hygroscopic, so minimize its exposure to air.
- Dissolve the NaOH in Water:
- Slowly add the weighed NaOH pellets to about 800 mL of distilled water in a beaker. It’s crucial to add NaOH to water, not the other way around, to avoid an exothermic reaction that could cause splashing.
- Stir the solution continuously with a stirring rod or a magnetic stirrer until the NaOH is fully dissolved.
- Transfer the Solution to a Volumetric Flask:
- Once the NaOH is completely dissolved, carefully transfer the solution to a 1-liter volumetric flask.
- Adjust the Volume:
- Add more distilled water to the flask until the total volume reaches exactly 1 liter. Ensure the solution is mixed thoroughly by inverting the flask several times.
- Label and Store:
- Label the container with the concentration (2M NaOH), date of preparation, and any safety warnings. Store the solution in a tightly sealed container, preferably made of plastic, to avoid any reaction with glass.
Safety Considerations
NaOH is a strong base and can cause severe burns upon contact with skin or eyes. Always wear appropriate safety gear, including gloves, goggles, and a lab coat, when handling NaOH. Work in a well-ventilated area, and be cautious of the exothermic nature of NaOH dissolution.
Conclusion
A 2M NaOH stock solution is a fundamental reagent in many laboratory settings. By following these steps, you can prepare this solution accurately and safely, ensuring you have a reliable reagent for your experimental needs. Always handle NaOH with care and store it properly to maintain its efficacy and safety.
