Introduction:
0.9% Saline Solution, often referred to as Normal Saline, is a fundamental solution in medical and laboratory practices. It is an isotonic solution containing 9 grams of sodium chloride (NaCl) dissolved in distilled water to make 1 litter of solution. This concentration matches the osmolarity of human blood and is widely used for various applications, including intravenous fluid replacement and laboratory procedures.
Materials:
- Sodium chloride (NaCl) – 9 grams
- Distilled water – 1 liter
- Sterile container or bottle
- Stirring rod
- Weighing balance
- Autoclave (for sterilization)
Procedure:
- Begin by measuring 9 grams of sodium chloride (NaCl) using a weighing balance. Ensure that the measurement is precise.
- Pour the 9 grams of NaCl into a sterile container or bottle.
- Add 1 liter of distilled water to the container with NaCl. Use caution to avoid contamination, and ensure that the water is at room temperature.
- Gently stir the solution with a sterile stirring rod until all the sodium chloride has completely dissolved. This may take a few minutes.
- Once the solution is prepared, it should be sterilized. The entire container or bottle, including its cap, should be autoclaved to ensure sterility.
- After autoclaving, allow the solution to cool to room temperature.
Usage:
0.9% Saline Solution is now ready for use in medical procedures, laboratory experiments, or any application where an isotonic saline solution is required.
