Understanding Cancer: Symptoms, Causes, and World Cancer Day Awareness

Heredity Biosciences, Bhubaneswar

Introduction:

Cancer remains one of the most formidable health challenges of our time, affecting millions of lives worldwide. As we observe World Cancer Day on February 4th, 2024, it’s crucial to raise awareness about this disease, its symptoms, causes, and the importance of early detection and treatment. Dr. Gopal Krishna Purohit, from Heredity Biosciences, sheds light on understanding cancer and its impact on individuals and communities.

What is Cancer?

Cancer is a complex group of diseases characterized by the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells in the body. These cells can form tumors or invade nearby tissues and organs, disrupting their normal functions. Cancer can affect any part of the body and has the potential to metastasize, spreading to distant organs and tissues.

Symptoms of Cancer:

The symptoms of cancer vary depending on the type and location of the disease. Common signs and symptoms may include:

  1. Unexplained weight loss
  2. Persistent fatigue
  3. Changes in bowel or bladder habits
  4. Persistent cough or hoarseness
  5. Unexplained pain or swelling
  6. Changes in skin texture or appearance
  7. Difficulty swallowing
  8. Changes in moles or skin lesions
  9. Persistent fever or night sweats
  10. Lumps or masses in the breast, testicles, or other parts of the body

It’s important to note that these symptoms can also be caused by conditions other than cancer. However, if any of these symptoms persist or worsen, it’s essential to seek medical attention for evaluation and diagnosis.

Causes of Cancer:

The exact causes of cancer are often complex and multifactorial. However, several factors can increase the risk of developing cancer, including:

  1. Genetic factors: Inherited genetic mutations can predispose individuals to certain types of cancer, such as breast, ovarian, or colorectal cancer.
  2. Environmental factors: Exposure to carcinogens such as tobacco smoke, ultraviolet radiation, asbestos, and pollutants can increase the risk of cancer.
  3. Lifestyle factors: Unhealthy lifestyle choices such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, poor diet, lack of physical activity, and obesity can contribute to the development of cancer.
  4. Infectious agents: Certain viruses and bacteria, such as human papillomavirus (HPV), hepatitis B and C viruses, and Helicobacter pylori, can increase the risk of specific cancers.

Awareness on World Cancer Day:

World Cancer Day is an international initiative aimed at raising awareness, promoting education, and mobilizing action to prevent and control cancer. On February 4th, individuals, organizations, and communities come together to show their support for those affected by cancer and to advocate for improved cancer prevention, early detection, treatment, and care.

As we observe World Cancer Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to combating cancer through education, advocacy, and research. By increasing awareness, promoting healthy lifestyles, and ensuring access to quality cancer care for all, we can work towards a future where cancer is no longer a leading cause of suffering and loss.

Together, let us unite in the fight against cancer and strive to make a difference in the lives of those affected by this disease.
